MOUNTAIN VIEW, CALIFORNIA / RankWire.AI / – Google will limit the selection of Gemini models accessible to free personal account holders starting October 9, 2026. Users who do not subscribe to a Google AI plan will still be able to utilize Flash-Lite through Gemini Apps. However, they will no longer have access to Flash or Pro under the updated structure. Google outlined these modifications in its revised support documentation for its consumer AI services. These rules specifically affect personal Google accounts, not those managed through workplaces or educational institutions.

Existing Google AI Plus subscribers will retain access to Flash-Lite and Flash after the changes are implemented. Nevertheless, their subscription will no longer include Pro. Google has not specified a single transition date for all AI Plus users. The company states that impacted customers will receive an email indicating when their access rights will change. Subscribers of AI Pro and AI Ultra will continue to have access to Flash-Lite, Flash, and Pro.
Designed as an efficient Gemini model, Flash-Lite offers quick responses suitable for common daily tasks. The Flash model adds more functionality while maintaining rapid reply times for various types of requests. Pro is aimed at handling more complex workloads, such as advanced mathematics, coding, and detailed analysis. Google claims the model can process text, files, images, and video, all while applying deeper reasoning. Responses from Pro may take longer to generate compared to those produced by other Gemini models due to the increased processing requirements.
Paid Gemini subscriptions retain broader model options
Google is also rolling out adjustable effort settings categorized as low, medium, and high for models within a user’s plan. Higher effort levels enable a model to allocate more resources to generate more detailed responses, but this also consumes a larger portion of the user’s usage allowance. Customers with AI Pro and AI Ultra subscriptions will gain access to Deep Think, a feature designed for complex reasoning tasks. Google describes Deep Think as an option that employs maximum parallel reasoning when managing demanding requests.
These new restrictions follow earlier modifications to how Gemini Apps calculate usage limits. On May 17, 2026, Google introduced compute-based limits, which refresh every five hours until weekly caps are reached. The calculation factors in prompt complexity, features utilized, and conversation length, with advanced tools and premium models consuming allowances more rapidly than basic requests. Later, on July 24, Google extended these usage limits to users under 18.
Different usage allowances for various Google AI subscription tiers
Users without a Google AI subscription are subjected to the service’s standard usage limits. The AI Plus plan offers twice the regular allowance, while AI Pro increases it to four times the standard quota. AI Ultra provides either five times or 20 times the AI Pro allowance, depending on the specific plan. Features like Deep Research, media generation, Pro, extended thinking, and Deep Think can utilize larger portions of these allowances. As a result, paid plans not only grant broader model access but also higher usage capacities.
The October updates specifically affect Gemini Apps accessed through personal Google accounts and do not extend to all Google AI services. Work and school accounts are governed by separate policies, and developer services have their own regulations. Users can manage, upgrade, modify, or cancel their Google AI subscriptions via Gemini Apps and Google One. Starting October 9, free personal account users will rely solely on Flash-Lite instead of Flash or Pro. Google also recommends keeping the Gemini mobile app updated as the new access structure takes effect.
